The twenty-first installment of a new series on the blog that we will be posting throughout the month of December. As some of you are aware, Music for All will be taking an Honor Band to the 2017 Rose Parade. Our members were selected by audition for the ensemble and come from all across the United States. We are looking forward to coming together for the first time as a band at the end of December and we hope this series will allow us all to get to know some (hopefully most!) of the members of this awesome ensemble!

Name: Briana Lackey

Hometown: Knoxville, TN

School Name: The University of Tennessee-Chattanooga

Section: Color Guard

What made you decide to apply to be a part of the band?
I attended the Music for All Summer Symposium two summers ago and it was announced in one of our sessions. I immediately text my mom and told her we were going! I have been seeking out opportunities to be involved in color guard since I started my freshman year of High School. Camps, Clinics, DCI, WGI, really anything and everything related to the sport, so this was just one more chance to learn from an amazing staff and surround myself with people that love it as much as I do!

What part of the trip are you most excited about?
I think the WHOLE trip is going to be exciting! I’m excited to be able to march in the parade- it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity for sure! I’m excited to be around other students and staff that represent the best in the country. I’m excited to be with two of my friends from high school and one of the students I’ve been teaching this fall. And of course I’m excited for DISNEYLAND!

What are three things you’ve learned from being involved in band?
Being involved in band has taught me so many life lessons, too many to count really. If I had to pick three, I would say it’s taught me patience, respect, and leadership.

Most memorable moment in band?
Any time we perform is a memorable moment. I love performing! My most memorable performance was at a competition my junior year where our band swept all categories and won the whole competition. It was my best performance all season and walking off the field I knew that it was our band’s best performance as well.

Besides band, what are you involved in at school?
In high school I was involved in Winterguard, Student Government, National Honor Society, Freshman and New Student Organization as well as two or three clubs. In college I’m a member of Kappa Delta Sorority, Student Government-Freshman Senate, Think Achieve, and the Campus Activities Board.

What’s your favorite book?
I don’t have a favorite, I have many!

What’s your favorite song or piece of music?
Brave by Sara Bareilles, great lyrics! Listen to it!

Favorite movie?
Pride and Prejudice

Favorite ice cream flavor?
Cookie Dough

What’s your current plan for what you want to do after graduating high school?
I have already graduated high school and I’m currently enrolled in college. I am studying exercise science and plan to go on and become a physical therapist. I am currently teaching color guard at a local high school and I love it! I want to continue and some day have my own program.

Tell us something interesting/unique about you:
I love to travel! I’ve been to 6 countries and 33 states. I want to visit all 50 states by the time I’m 25!
