The ninety-fifth installment of a new series on the blog that we will be posting throughout the month of December. As some of you are aware, Music for All will be taking an Honor Band to the 2017 Rose Parade. Our members were selected by audition for the ensemble and come from all across the United States. We are looking forward to coming together for the first time as a band at the end of December and we hope this series will allow us all to get to know some (hopefully most!) of the members of this awesome ensemble!

Name: Catrina Carte

Hometown: Palmer, AK

School Name: Colony High School

Section: Sousaphone

What made you decide to apply to be a part of the band?
I had performed in the 2014 Rose Parade with The Northern Sound -the only marching band in Alaska- and I loved it. When I saw fliers around my school’s band hall stating that BOA was holding auditions for an honor band for the Rose Parade, I jumped at the opportunity.

What part of the trip are you most excited about?
I’m mostly excited about marching the Rose Parade again, this time with a Sousaphone and not a Trumpet. I’m also excited about meeting Tuba players from across the states.

What are three things you’ve learned from being involved in band?
First, “One more time” never actually means one more time. Second, always be prepared for anything. Whether it’s weather, technical difficulties, or problematic people, be prepared and never panic. Third, you are not the most important player, everyone in the band is equal- treat them as such.

Most memorable moment in band?
I believe that my most memorable moment in band would be when I heard the Sousaphone for the first time. It changed my whole entire life, if I hadn’t heard the Sousaphones that day, I’d probably still be playing the Trumpet and wouldn’t be having as much fun as I am now.

What’s your favorite book?
Les Miserables

What’s your favorite song or piece of music?
Wine Dark Sea III. The Attentions of Souls.

Favorite movie?
Brothers Bloom

Favorite ice cream flavor?
Chocolate

What’s your current plan for what you want to do after graduating high school?
I plan on auditioning for DCI, most likely Open Class (but it’s my dream to march with Bluecoats), after my senior year. I hope to get accepted into Juilliard and major in performance, but at this point in time I’m not sure.

Have you participated in MFA/BOA events before? Which ones?
2015 Grand Nationals

Tell us something interesting/unique about you:
