The eighty-seventh installment of a new series on the blog that we will be posting throughout the month of December. As some of you are aware, Music for All will be taking an Honor Band to the 2017 Rose Parade. Our members were selected by audition for the ensemble and come from all across the United States. We are looking forward to coming together for the first time as a band at the end of December and we hope this series will allow us all to get to know some (hopefully most!) of the members of this awesome ensemble!

What made you decide to apply to be a part of the band?
My freshman year, the seniors told me all about their time when they had been a part of the BOA Honor Band in the Rose Parade in 2013. They talked about all the people they had met, marching in the parade, and what an overall fantastic experience it was for them. Ever since that time a couple of years ago, I knew I wanted to be a part of the BOA Honor Band when the opportunity came along!
What part of the trip are you most excited about?
I am most excited about being in Disneyland, especially getting to march through the park. I absolutely love Disneyland, and it will be incredibly fun getting to be there with my friends and having a different experience.
What are three things you’ve learned from being involved in band?
1. Band is not about competition, or being better than others. Being a musician is about being the best you can possibly be, and to try your hardest to get to that place. You can’t compare yourself to others, you can only become the best musician you can.
2. I have also learned a lot about leadership. Being a leader is not simply about being in charge and telling others what to do, but it is about leading by example, and having good character even when you aren’t in an exact position. Some of the best leaders are never given a title, but they have the personality and dedication to inspire others, which I think is an amazing quality.
3. One very important thing I have learned is to never give up, and to not settle. By working hard, and not letting others bring me down, I have worked to continuously become the best musician and person I can be.
Most memorable moment in band?
My most memorable moment in band was when my high school Wind Symphony toured the Pacific Northwest for a week during my freshman year. We played on many stages and in many concert halls, got to record a CD, ate tons of amazing food, and even rode Go-Karts!
Besides band, what are you involved in at school?
I am involved in my school’s theater productions, Winter Percussion, Symphony Orchestra, as well as National Honor Society, the math team, and the California Scholarship Federation. I also am an editor for our school’s literary magazine, I’m in the Journalism Club, Faith Club, and Debate Club.
What’s your favorite book?
Pride and Prejudice
What’s your favorite song or piece of music?
I love the Hamilton album! (both of them)

Tangled
Favorite ice cream flavor?
Orange sherbet ice cream with chocolate chips
What’s your current plan for what you want to do after graduating high school?
I plan to attend a four year college in California and earn my degree in Music Education, while possibly minoring in Environmental Science or Marine Biology. I also plan on marching Drum Corps for a few years!
Have you participated in MFA/BOA events before? Which ones?
I have attended two BOA Regional Championships each marching season since freshman year, and this past marching season, for the first time, my band went to Grand Nationals! I also attended the 2017 Summer Symposium and was a part of the weekend Leadership Experience as well as the Drum Major Institute.
Tell us something interesting/unique about you:
My favorite color is periwinkle! Periwinkle is a color, a flower, a cat in Blues Clues, and a steamship used to explore the Arctic in the American Civil War!
