The fourteenth installment of a new series on the blog that we will be posting throughout the month of December. As some of you are aware, Music for All will be taking an Honor Band to the 2017 Rose Parade. Our members were selected by audition for the ensemble and come from all across the United States. We are looking forward to coming together for the first time as a band at the end of December and we hope this series will allow us all to get to know some (hopefully most!) of the members of this awesome ensemble!

KailynneS

Name: Kailynne Smith

Hometown: Westfield, IN

School Name: Westfield High School

Section: Bass Clarinet

What made you decide to apply to be a part of the band?
The experience that I have had with Music for All over the summer and the opportunity to meet more people who love music!

What part of the trip are you most excited about?
Definitely marching in the parade. Back home we don’t do many parades, and I have never been to California!

What are three things you’ve learned from being involved in band?
I learned about leadership, and how to be a leader and set the best example, how to work with different personalities and to help them out, and I learned how to be a good person in my society!

Most memorable moment in band?
In my band, the most memorable moment was marching at Semi-State with my older brother at his last high school marching band competition. However, my favorite part of band outside of school was saluting the Drum Major Institute veterans, and watching their faces and seeing how much they cared about music and everyone in that room!

Besides band, what are you involved in at school?
Outside of band I play volleyball, but not on the school team. I’m in ukulele club, steel pan class, AP Music Theory, and clarinet choir and bass clarinet trio as extra groups.

What’s your favorite book?
My favorite book is To Kill a Mockingbird.

What’s your favorite song or piece of music?
Adagio for Strings because every time I hear it, I always find something else in it that I love.

Favorite movie?
The Goonies

Favorite ice cream flavor?
Cookies and Cream

What’s your current plan for what you want to do after graduating high school?
I plan to attend Ball State University and major in Music Education. I want to be a high school band director for marching and concert band. Maybe one day be a college band director.

Tell us something interesting/unique about you:
I have been in marching band since 7th grade. In 7th grade I was a prop helper. In 8th I was a tree that moved around the field. As a freshman and sophomore, I marched bass clarinet. As a junior I was drum major. Also, I’m the only one from my school to ever be in the Rose Parade!
