The twenty-fourth installment of a new series on the blog that we will be posting throughout the month of December. As some of you are aware, Music for All will be taking an Honor Band to the 2017 Rose Parade. Our members were selected by audition for the ensemble and come from all across the United States. We are looking forward to coming together for the first time as a band at the end of December and we hope this series will allow us all to get to know some (hopefully most!) of the members of this awesome ensemble!

Name: Sarah Coffee

Hometown: Bellbrook, OH

School Name: Bellbrook High School

Section: Bass Clarinet

What made you decide to apply to be a part of the band?
Well, I always had doubts that I was a good musician. I always believed I was at best, okay. I figured if I could just audition, I’d prove that I was better than okay. I must have been better than okay to have made it in!

What part of the trip are you most excited about?
Meeting new people, making new friends, seeing new sights, playing good music, and enjoying band for the last time. I’m also excited to meet people who play my instrument!! I’m the only one in my band, meeting others like me is always a blast!!

What are three things you’ve learned from being involved in band?
I learned to never be afraid of what you can do, always be bold because you never know who is watching and you could inspire others. I learned that I am more than just notes on a page, I am important and needed for more than just my specialty instrument. I also learned how to be independent, and that I didn’t need others to be a good person or be a good musician.

Most memorable moment in band?
Possibly when my director asked me to play bass clarinet. Or when one of the rookies in my band gave me a letter, and what she wrote was all I needed to feel like the year had gone well.

Besides band, what are you involved in at school?
I’m in art and choir! I also take a college level English class. I do a lot of writing and drawing!

What’s your favorite book?
The Great Gatsby, They Poured Fire on us From the Sky, and Play Dead, a book about zombie football players.

What’s your favorite song or piece of music?
My favorite piece to play is Parade of the Bumbling Wooden Soliders. My favorite song to listen to is Non-Stop, from Hamilton.

Favorite movie?
Anything horror or zombie-filled!

Favorite ice cream flavor?
Probably peppermint!

What’s your current plan for what you want to do after graduating high school?
I want to go to an Ohio college and study for Early Education, so I can either be a science teacher or an intermediate school teacher!

Tell us something interesting/unique about you:
I am an artist! I draw cartoons and comic strips- I make characters and write stories about them. I have a whole world planned out with little microscopic details. It’s quite fun! I hope one day to be able to sit down and write the books fully, not just in fragments.
