Many people think of organized music-making, such as marching band or orchestra, as an exclusive activity for those who can afford the instruments, tutoring, and travel. See how Music for All overcomes this label and ensures that all students have access to active music-making!
Out of 1,474 student participants at the 2019 Summer Symposium, 844 were young women; additionally, two-thirds of our 600+ Drum Major Institute attendees were female. Campers traveled from 36 home states, in addition to a contingent of 11 Australian students. Over 75 students and 15+ directors were granted full or partial scholarships based on demonstrated financial need. Thirty students on scholarship through the I-65 urban corridor initiative attended camp with their directors to promote innovation, collaboration, and leadership development within their own programs. Of those 30 students, 22 also participated in the Leadership Weekend program that preludes the Symposium. And last but not least, through MFA’s much-expanded Muncie community outreach program, we brought more than 75 participants together in public drum circles and dance classes. These participants ranged from groups of school kids to whole families, as well as our friends at Hillcroft Services, Inc., a nonprofit that provides services, opportunity, and support to individuals with disabilities and their families.
