The one-hundred and fifteenth installment of a new series on the blog that we will be posting throughout the month of December. As some of you are aware, Music for All will be taking an Honor Band to the 2017 Rose Parade. Our members were selected by audition for the ensemble and come from all across the United States. We are looking forward to coming together for the first time as a band at the end of December and we hope this series will allow us all to get to know some (hopefully most!) of the members of this awesome ensemble!
Name: Kolin Edrington
Hometown: Borden, IN
School Name: Henryville Jr./Sr. High School
Section: Trumpet
What made you decide to apply to be a part of the band?
I knew that being a part of this ensemble would be a once in a lifetime experience.
What part of the trip are you most excited about?
I am most excited to meet all of the other band and guard members.
What are three things you’ve learned from being involved in band?
The three things I have learned from being in band is compassion, teamwork, and dedication. The people I have met, who come from all kinds of backgrounds, have taught me that you cannot judge someone based on where they come from. Band requires a level of teamwork that many sports do not require. There are so many moments when you have to simply trust the people next to you when a small mistake could ruin part of a show. Finally, band has taught me that dedication is one of the most important characteristics required in this field of work. With the amount of criticism people will face in this world, dedication to what you do is not just recommended, it is a necessity.
Most memorable moment in band?
I remember when I first joined pep band and got to play with all of the people who were serious about band in my school. Going from a seventh grade ensemble of about 25 people to a ensemble that consisted of over 50 people, most of them high schoolers, is an incredible memory I have.
Besides band, what are you involved in at school?
I am a part of our school’s theatre program and I am on our high school swim team.
What’s your favorite book?
My favorite book is currently The Selection, but only because I just read it. That will probably change very soon.
What’s your favorite song or piece of music?
My favorite song at the moment is Think of You by Christina Grimmie and my favorite piece of music is Come Sweet Death by Bach.
Favorite movie?
Currently Star Wars: Rogue One
Favorite ice cream flavor?
Mint Chocolate Chip
What’s your current plan for what you want to do after graduating high school?
I plan on going to college for Music Composition and hopefully one day I will be able to score films or video games.
Have you participated in MFA/BOA events before? Which ones?
I have been a part of the Music for All Summer Symposium in 2014, 2015, and 2016.
Tell us something interesting/unique about you:
I will be attending Music for All’s Summer Symposium again in 2017, the fourth time I will take part in the Drum Major Institute.
